Today was a big tantrum day. To be fair, none of us got enough sleep. Both kids were up twice during the night meaning both parents were up for two solid hours trying to get them back to sleep. Anyway, Marie slept until about 9:00 and has been having fit after fit over various things – putting on clothes, getting out of the hammock when she’s told, holding hands in the street, getting out of the car when it’s time to come inside, etc. She is much happier now after lunch. She’s upstairs in my room now having quiet time (meaning she is playing in my jewelry box) and Brian is maybe going to take a nap. We’ll see.

scavenging
I guess it’s ok if he eats a grape out of the trash can. It was on top. Plus, I couldn’t pry it out of his little jaws. How come he’s still awake anyway???
"Singing 'Leap' speaks out to save own life"
Oak Hill, VA – A dramatic rescue was made today in the sleepy neighborhood of Franklin Farm. Mild-mannered housewife Laura Hesse, 33, was “cleaning the kitchen, like usual” when she put a bag of trash from the kitchen trash can on the ground, only to hear a familiar voice bravely singing, “A, b, c, d, e, f, g…” She immediately recognized Leap, the cheerful alphabet-singing frog who is a favorite toy of her two children, and realized he had been placed in the trash by her son Brian, 14 months, who loves to help clean up. Without another thought, Hesse fearlessly plunged her hand all the way to the bottom of the stinky bag to rescue the frog. “I smelled the brown spots on his shirt and they seem to be coffee, not poop, so I think he’ll be ok,” stated Hesse. She used her husband’s mini screwdriver set to extract Leap’s voicebox and batteries before placing him in the washing machine.
Snow
I asked Marie what was new and what should be posted on the website about her life. She said “the snow!” After prodding her some more, she said “I went with my daddy in the snow last night!” I’m guessing she had an interesting dream 🙂
What won't he eat?
We were visiting a potential daycare provider yesterday when Brian wandered into her kitchen. He wandered out seconds later chewing on something. Turns out they have a dog. Who eats wet chunky dog food. GROSS. We washed his mouth out. It didn’t seem to bother him much.
A New Bed!
We got a new bed for Marie today. It’s actually a bunk bed which splits into two twin beds. She hasn’t slept in it yet, but she’s very excited. The plan is to give Brian the other bunk when he’s done with the crib, and then at some point give someone a bunkbed. We’ll see 🙂
Brian's Wild Ride
If you watch the Simpsons, you know what I’m talking about. “Go here and watch the video”:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9-kZAyaTkM, about 26 seconds in. Marge is shopping and Maggie ends up on the grocery conveyor belt.
On Friday, at the supermarket. Brian was in the main part of the shopping cart. Laura pulled up to the self-checkout, and was scanning in the items. She looked up to get the next item, and there is Brian, on his stomach, surfing down the belt toward her. He had just climbed up from the cart and got right on there in a superman pose–arms outstretched.
Thank goodness child protective services wasn’t around.
The Haircut
Everyone does it, that’s what they’re telling us. I’m posting this on 7/26 but it happened last Friday (7/21). Marie was supposed to be taking a nap, and instead found the scissors in our bathroom. The result is below (click to enlarge):

It was darn short — it’s a wonder she didn’t cut herself — but is already growing back. She went in yesterday and got a haircut to even everything out, it looks a bit better.
We've moved!
The server that is. Hessekids.com has changed servers. If you run into any problems, please let me know! I think I did everything, but one is never really sure about these things.
The proper way to eat a cheese cracker
First, you separate the crackers. One cracker will have no cheese on it. Discard this cracker. The other one will have cheese on it. Turn it upside down, squish it into the table, then remove the cracker. Scrape the cheese off the table with your finger and eat it. Discard the other cracker.
